This was delicious! Thank you! It was so economical and such a comfort food. I fried one large yellow onion and that seemed to be enough. We served it with just simple pita bread....we like the Mediterranean kind. After the first 10 minutes of cooking the lentils I started sauteeing the onions so when the lentils were done it was all ready to combine and then serve.
Btw, I can browse magazines via my local library online. Also I didn't have any cayenne pepper so I just used ground black pepper and it still seemed like it was missing something. My husband added chopped fresh chilis from our garden for heat. They will be so sweet and delicious by letting them cook this long! I made this with brown basmati rice which makes the cooking simpler because the brown rice cooks as long and at the same time as the lentils and gives it more of a nutty flavour. My kind of delicious, feel-good comfort food. Thank you!
And do add some sugar to caramelize onions.

As i am a fitness conscious person i normally prefer brown rice but that is only plain rice. Gives nice subtle flavour and helps your digestion! :).
I don't prepare using the garlic powder or cumin but sometimes I do add allspice.
Once the rice is cooked and the onions are brown and crispy, move the lentils and rice to a serving bowl and top with the caramelized onions.

Set a large 6 quart pot over medium heat. Stir the rice, 3/4 cup water, 1 teaspoon salt, and the olive oil into the lentils.
So to proof him wrong I cooked this today while he was at work. The texture was amazing, but it was a little too liquidy. Most people won't think twice about serving basic cornbread when is on the table. Stir well, then cover the pot and simmer the lentils for 15 minutes.
